Black Bears are some of the most traditional and rustic ways to dress up the floor of your cabin or country home. I know that whenever I think of a cabin out in the woods, I immediately conjure up images of a big, comfortable couch, a roaring fire filling the room with it's glow, and your black bear mount in the corner. These black bear mounts don't have to be limited to a cabin or lodge in the country though. Black bear mounts in any home of a hunter or outdoorsman could really help spruce up the decor. In today's day and age of animal rights, these types of rugs and mounts are becoming increasingly difficult to find. You can't just waltz into the taxidermy store down at the local mall and find one. Handling of mounted black bear rugs is very important. Be careful not to ruffle the hair and ruin the appearance of the mount. Unnecessary touching or handling of the trophy black bear rugs should be avoided. Treat your animal hide like the artwork it is.

Dusting
Mounted black bears, like furniture, will collect dust. Therefore, periodic dusting is necessary. Trophies can be dusted with a vacuum attachment or they can be wiped off with a soft damp cloth, always moving in the direction of the grain of the hair. Never vacuum or wipe a trophy head going against the grain of the hair. The eyes and nostrils can be cleaned with a damp cloth also.
Cleaning
Some mounts can become soiled to the point that they need additional cleaning rather than just dusting. When this occurs they can be washed with soap and water. When washing trophies, take a bucket of mild soap powder or chips, and wash with a soft damp sponge. Always remember to wash with the grain of the animal's hair. The following day, when the trophy is dry, the hair should be brushed with a soft brush or comb, once again in the same direction as the grain of the hair. Don't saturate the trophy or soak the head or skin in water.
Facts
This animal is approximately 5 feet long and varies in weight from 125 to 400 pounds. It has small eyes, rounded ears, a long snout, a large body, and a short tail. The shaggy hair varies in color from white through chocolate brown, cinnamon brown, and blonde to black, but most of them are indeed black or a darker shade of brown.
While they are capable of standing and walking on their hind legs, the usual posture is on all fours. The black bear's characteristic shuffle results from walking flat-footed, with the hind legs slightly longer than the front legs. Each paw has five strong, non-retractable claws used for tearing, digging, and climbing. One blow from a powerful front paw is enough to kill an adult deer. But in spite of their size and strength, black bears are surprisingly agile and careful in their movements.
